Periodontal region is a system that encases a tooth and comprises of gums, periodontal ligament, tooth root cementum and alveolar bone. Its function is holding teeth attached to the jaw bone tissue as well as keeping the surface of oral mucosa intact.

Patients can develop periodontal diseases such as gingivitis – inflammation of the gums characterized by redness and swelling or bleeding, caused by plaque (bacteria), which is fully curable when treated timely; the more serious condition is periodontitis – changes in deeper parts of the periodontal tissue, deterioration of periodontal ligament and bone, all of which results in loose teeth or their falling out.

Crucial in periodontal diseases treatment is maintaining impeccable oral hygiene, regular scaling and – in case of advanced disease – curettage or other surgical procedures combined with antibiotics cure.
